CEO Brief

We made it! Pride Month has come to a close! Lauren and I gave each other a big high-five and breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday night as we wrapped up our 15th and final event for Pride. What a month it was.

The last week of the month was the busiest with an incredible Pose for Pride fashion show last Friday at the Virgin Hotel. Thank you to the Virgin and to Andrew Clancy and Any Old Iron for the support. It was an honor to speak at the Bianca Page Way unveiling on Saturday. Then it was off to the Nashville SC Pride Night game where Lauren was honored as Hero of the Match, we had over 400 in the Pride sections including Mayor Cooper who joined us in ours to celebrate soccer and Pride! We could not thank the whole team at Nashville SC for going above and beyond in their support of Pride and the community. We loved speaking with the Country Music Association (CMA) on Wednesday to wrap up the month.

Wednesday Night we ended the month on a high note quite literally. Pride In Local Music was a huge success and the VIG Viewing Party was packed. That was in large part because it was at the newly opened Tribe Nashville! We can not thank the team at Tribe and Play enough for pushing hard to get the bar open to host us, it was an honor to be the first event. Tribe and Play helped us kick off Pride Month with the businesses awards broadcast from Play. I hope you enjoyed the PILM concert, it was filled with incredible performances from amazing venues! Thank you to all the artists and the production team who made it possible.

I had almost made it through the month without any tears, and then the Nashville Predators invited me down to the Arena on Monday to accept a check of support from the Nashville Predators Foundation, for their work to support the community and Pride Night. I was overcome with emotions when I came around the corner in front of the Arena and the entire Preds staff was assembled to say happy Pride and present the check. To say I was surprised was an understatement. Also in attendance and to hand over the check was Preds player and LGBT ally, Mark Borowieki. Mark is the real deal and I had just read his article on being an ally and it was a pleasure to shake his hand. I highly recommend you read his piece and the coverage of the day and get the warm and fuzzies feeling Pride all over again!

Gestures like that and commitment to Pride year-round is what I have been thinking about as we move into July. I wrote this column for the Nashville Business Journal that you can also find here, on how to celebrate Pride all year long and how we are going to need to redouble our efforts going forward. Businesses and individuals are going to have to engage and take action not just in June.

We are committed to that work here at the LGBT chamber and we thank you for being a part of it with us. We are going to take a much-needed break for July. I am heading on vacation next week and then Lauren is taking the latter part of the month off. We will be coming to you with a few updates as needed and we will have a Brewing Up Business on the 15th, but other than that we are stepping back to recharge. We will be back in August with new communications and new programming. One thing that will remain the same will be our commitment to ADVOCATE, EDUCATE, and CONNECT on behalf of our members to advance LGBT+ equality in business and society.

Have a great 4th of July, and I hope you had a Happy Pride!

The Nashville LGBT Chamber has been working with the ACLU of Tennessee to find businesses to challenge the anti-trans “Bathroom Signage Law” that was passed this year. We hope you saw the email earlier today with the details.

The Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce, the Human Rights Campaign, and the ACLU of Tennessee, are looking for businesses to sign an Amicus Brief (friend of the court brief) in support of the lawsuit challenge. Please let us know if you are interested in more information on this.

ACLU-TN is asking the court to stop enforcement of the law, including stopping the issuance of 30-day notices, while the lawsuit proceeds. Please let the ACLU know, if you receive a notice of non-compliance with the law. Email -

Also this week, our member Mike Curb of Curb Records filed a separate suit challenging the anti-trans Bathroom Signage Law.

The open carry law also went into effect July 1st and we have information and resources for businesses that choose not to allow it as a private business.

We held various educational programs to celebrate Pride Month, including Classroom Connect: The Business of Inclusion.
