CEO Brief

Happy Monday and I hope you have had a good July. We took a break from communicating for a couple of weeks but wanted to come to you today as there are some events and news that we want to make sure you are aware of.

I hope you have had a good July. I celebrated the 4th downtown with thousands of others at the fireworks celebration. After that, I took a vacation that I had been looking forward to for months to Provincetown, MA I along with hundreds of others, developed a “breakthrough case” of the Delta variant of COVID. I ended my quarantine today and am feeling much better after being pretty sick, they say that vaccinated people have a lesser case of it, and knowing that I would have hated to feel what full COVID symptoms felt like. I shared a post about it with further details that you can read hereI have been open and shared this to educate those that are vaccinated that they are not immune and still need to take precautions, and to plead with those that are still unvaccinated to get the shot as they are affecting others and that 95% of deaths are from unvaccinated people. We all need to get vaccinated and stop the spread of extremely contagious variants and continue to do our part in educating others on the need to get vaccinated. We have been and still are, all in this together.

Lauren is taking a much-deserved vacation this week and will be back in the office next week. I hope she has a COVID-free vacation and enjoys some time off. If you need anything regarding membership you can reach out to me this week.

We have a Brewing Up Business Thursday and a minority/diversity-owned business certification training tomorrow. See details below and I hope to see you Thursday for networking. Check below for details and much more information and news you should know about.

As a reminder, paid memberships will be required to attend events and get updates starting in August. We will be sending out more information on that next week. Log in to the Member Portal and see if you are a paid member. As always, thank you for being a member, we are nothing without our membership. Stay safe and healthy.

Last Monday there was some major news that broke regarding prominent people that are out and Nashville. History was made when Nashville Predator player Luke Prokop came out! In an intimate and in-depth article with The Athletic, Luke shared his story and his true authentic self with the world. I was honored to have been interviewed for the article, and I talked about what a wonderful team he was joining and how he would be supported by the Preds. We have a long history with the Nashville Predators and they are committed to diversity and inclusion from the top down. You could see that in the statements from the Predators leadership and the NHL. That part of the story was not put in the main article as it focused on Luke as it should, but it has been covered in other places and we look forward to talking more about this with others and someday with Luke directly!

When his fellow Predator Mark Borowieki wrote about supporting Pride, he mentioned that he could not wait to see an out NHL player, it is great that he will have a teammate that was the first! We salute Luke and thank him for stepping up and out and welcome him to Nashville!

We wanted to make sure you had seen the wonderful news that the “Anti-Trans Bathroom Signage Law” was blocked from going into effect by a federal judge.

We want to thank the ACLU of Tennessee and our members who were the plaintiffs in this case. We had worked with many businesses on signing an amicus brief in support of the case. That brief is no longer needed but may be required again if the ruling is appealed further. We will keep you updated on the ongoing developments.

Jennifer Pritzker has had a huge impact on transgender issues this year. She is a member of our Chamber through the Robin Road Trust Company and we have been working with her closely on a number of issues, her op-ed and her speaking out during the session really had an impact.

She is continuing her advocacy by donating $101 thousand dollars to the ACLU of Tennessee for transgender issuesWe thank her for this and all the work she has done for our trans siblings and to make Tennessee a more inclusive place.

Representation matters! The old saying is true, “If you are not at the table then you are on the menu.” With that in mind, we want to make sure you know of an important event that helps get openly LGBT elected officials at the table.

The LGBTQ Victory Fund is back with its annual event highlighting the important work of electing LGBTQ people to all levels of government.

This year's event is Thursday, October 7th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at our member, the Virgin Hotel. They will be celebrating the formation of the Metro Council's LGBT Caucus and the election of the first 2 openly LGBT state House members-- Reps. Torrey Harris and Eddie Mannis.

Tickets and sponsor opportunities are on sale now.
