Weekly Wrap-Up: April 22, 2022

The Weekly

Wrap Up

April 22, 2022

What the Chamber worked on this week and what you need to know.

CEO Brief

Did you see those sponsors for the Pride In Business Awards?! Thank you to the sponsors for the support and thank you to the record number of nominees that turned in their questionnaires. Those are in the hands of judges now and we will announce the top three finalists in each category at a special event on Wednesday, May 11th.

Also at that event (you Weekly readers are hearing it here first) we will give away more than $60,000 in grants to local businesses for COVID recovery. This is in partnership with the NGLCC National LGBT Chamber of Commerce and Grubhub! Look for further information next week on this incredible event and thanks to the NGLCC and Grubhub!

We had a packed Brewing Up Business at The Hart, people are so glad to be networking and seeing all the new places in Nashville that have opened. Check out a full recap below.

Thanks to the Canadian Consul General for inviting the Chamber to a special reception talking about the work Canada does with us and other orgs and the strong business ties it has with Tennessee. This was before the premier of the Musical “Come From Away '' at our member TPAC. I highly recommend the show, it was very moving and gives you hope in humanity when faced with tragedy and challenges. Go see it this weekend!

Congrats to our President, Terry Vo, for being recognized by Nashville Pride as their Community Service Award winner. Terry will be honored on stage at the Pride Festival in June.

Pride also announced the Grand Marshals of the Parade and other award winners. With the announcement last week of entertainment, June’s Pride Festival is going to be awesome!

An emotional but wonderful highlight of the week was the unveiling of “David McMurry Way” in Madison.

David McMurry was a board member of the Chamber and involved in many other groups. We lost him far too soon in 2020 and still miss him today.

You can read more about David here and you can watch the full video and see pictures from the sign unveiling event here. Thank you to all involved that made this tribute happen.

How David treated people and his take on life, and the "Come From Away" show, really reminded me this week that we should all try to be kinder to one another and come together to help one another. It also reminds us how precious and short life can be, and we should strive to be happy and leave the world better than we found it. I am committing to that, will you join me?

The legislature should gavel the session closed next week.

Unfortunately the “Anti-Trans Athlete Enforcement” bill was passed this week and sent to the Governor's desk where he is expected to sign it. The “Anti-Trans College Student Athlete” bill will be voted on by the House on Monday, if it passes it to will go the Governor's Desk. The “Student Pronoun” bill is in the final committee this week in the Senate, we are hopeful we can stop it there.

We also previously had three bills we were working to stop sent to the General-Sub Committee. While they are not dead, this is a very positive move that makes it highly unlikely that these bills could pass. The “Youth Protection Act”,  “Don't Say Gay V.2”, and now the “Common Law Marriage Bill” are there.

Take direct grassroots action! Our partners the Tennessee Equality Project have several campaigns active. We hope you will take action.

Early Voting started last week. Did you go vote? If not you have until Thursday , April 27th, after that you will have to go on Election Day, Tuesday, May, 3rd.

Here is great info to help you VOTE:
