Weekly Wrap-Up: January 11, 2019

Happy New Year Members! 2019 has come in BIG! Did you miss last week’s Weekly Wrap-Up? I did. I was sick with a cold from traveling over the holiday and then an awesome birthday weekend that rolled into New Year’s Eve and then a full day of Leadership Nashville Business Day. My body crashed after that and I took last Friday and the weekend to recover. Good thing I did as this week has been one of the busiest. What a way to enter into 2019. Here is all you should know the Chamber has been working on!
PLEASE read, there is some really important info and I need your help on some things!

Membership Manager-

I hope you saw your email from me on Tuesday announcing that our new Membership Manager started. I introduced you to Lauren Bland who started on Monday and who has been awesome this week absorbing all the info I am throwing at her and learning all the systems and technologies that the Chambers uses. If you missed the email you can read all about her here.

Predators Pride Night-

Pride night is coming up fast! You will be hearing a lot more about it in the coming weeks, but if you have not gotten your tickets you need to! Tickets are selling fast and the Preds are so popular that the seats held for Pride Night will be open to everyone a week before the game. SO DON’T WAIT until the last minute!! Get your tickets here. All tickets buyers are going to get an awesome shirt as well as see the Preds play and be able to show their PRIDE!

If you are interested in taking a group of 15+ people you can contact me and I will get you in touch with our Predators rep and he can save you some money makes sure everyone is sitting together. I know we have several corporate members doing this!
The Brewing Up Business reception beforehand is coming together! Thank you to our sponsors for that event- Postmates and Dell!

January Brewing Up Business-

It’s a new year and we are doing a membership drive to help you create a new you! We are kicking off 2019 at a member who can help you eat just what you need to take that weight off! Clean Eatz is a meal prep company and they are hosting us for BUB on Thursday! You can find out more info and make sure you register here.

LGBT Certified Business Recognition-
I need your help. We need to create a list of private businesses in our market that recognize LGBT Certification or have procurement set-asides for LGBT businesses? Is that you? Do you know of businesses that do? I have a good list started and we think we know all our members, but we want to double check! We will be announcing why we are asking soon, let's just say it's going to be big!

Equal Business Opportunity Program-

Today was a historic day! I was honored to stand with other members of the Mayors Minority Business Council and Mayor David Briley, as he signed into law Nashville's first Equal Business Opportunity Program, which will help level the playing field for minority and women-owned businesses. It is a major step in building prosperity for all Nashvillians and there is more to come. This is the first of other changes that are coming. Look for more information soon. You can read more about the historic legislation here and see the signing ceremony here.

Big steps by Metro Police and LGBT community-
You may remember back in October I told you about Metro PD speaking at our Brewing Up Business about recently surfaced cyberbullying of a transgender person by several Metro police, fire, and teachers. Well, this week Metro took several actions on the matter.

First, they reprimanded the police officers involved. You can see the story here, which I was interviewed for. As I stated; we think of police as protecting us from bullying, from discrimination, or harassment, not instigating it.

The other action taken was the hiring of an LGBT Community Liaison. Out and about did an excellent article on Officer Catie Poole and how this position came to be.

This is another historic event and one that will benefit the community greatly. I want to again and I hope you will to, thank Metro Police, Metro Fire, and Mayor Briley’s office, for immediately reaching out to the Chamber and the community and taking these actions to correct this. Something very positive came from this unfortunate situation and Nashville again showed that it is a welcoming and safe community.

Planning for 2019-
Saturday the board of directors and staff of the Chamber will be in an all-day strategic planning retreat! We will be looking back and seeing how 2018 went and we will be planning for 2019 and beyond! There are major opportunity and growth coming and you are such an important part of that. This is your Chamber! Tell us what you would like us to focus on and where you think we should be headed. We would love to hear from you. Wherever we go we know it is up and as we said all of our 20th anniversary year “We are just getting started!”

Thanks,
Joe
