CEO Brief- ?
What a week, and what a Weekly. It is a long but important one, please take a look.

This has been a week of ups and downs. It has been wonderful to get the recognitions that have come from my work and the continued impact we are having but then facing the discrimination that comes with being LGBT just sucks.

I am so honored to have been named 40 Under 40 of LGBTQ Leaders nationally by Business Equality Magazine, and then the Nashville Business Journal profiled me for their 'Boss' series last week. This week I was also named 40 Under 40 for 2020 by Nashville Business Journal here locally and I was welcomed into Nashville Rotary as a member. Those humbling and happy moments are then countered with the emails, calls, and threats from people reading those things and telling me I am a sinner, fraud, faggot, and more; while belittling, attacking, and disparaging the work we do. The lowest point this week, and really in all the time I have been CEO, was the passage of the adoption bill on Tuesday where our Legislature put into law discrimination. I truly believe we did everything that we could to stop it from passing, but it has bothered me since on what else we might have done.

I use the highs and the lows of this week to dig-in and work harder. I look at the work we are doing week after week and see all the positive ways we are improving things in Nashville and building relationships that will further advance inclusion and diversity, to keep pushing. We won't give up and you can't either. Use our ups and downs and add them to the highs and lows you have faced this week to continue the fight that we all have to keep working on together.

We are proud of our CEO, Joe Woolley, for his official introduction at the Rotary Club of Nashville! The connections and relationships made there with civic and business leaders will be invaluable to our Chamber.

If you would ever like to attend a lunch he would love to
Joe was also named to the  Nashville Business Journal 's 40 Under 40 list! We saw several other members on this list and want to congratulate them!
Joe spoke on a diversity and inclusion panel as part of Leadership Middle Tennessee on Wednesday. LMT is a regional leadership program founded to engage community and business leaders in the 10 county region of Middle Tennessee. Our board member, Terry Vo, served on this year's planning committee. Applications are being accepted for this program now!
We were happy to attend a cocktail reception at Marcum LLP to celebrate their merger with CPA Consulting Group on Wednesday. Cathy Werthan , CPA's President, will lead the Marcum office. Cathy was the Treasurer of the Chamber for 7 years and still assists us with financials. We love this team and are excited for their next chapter.  Thank you to Marcum for continuing to be the Chambers bookkeeper.
We spent an incredible evening with the LGBT community at 'Uniting for Equality' at the Hutton Hotel. We rallied the community to the actions at the start of Session and got them ready to take action in the upcoming weeks. Many elected officials were in the room and we thanked them for their service and for standing for equality.
We had a great planning meeting with Sarah at Topgolf this week. Topgolf will host our March Brewing Up Business, you won't want to miss it.
We are looking for a drink sponsor for this event. If you are interested, please reach out to Lauren. See event details below!
We attended another Partnership 2030 meeting on Thursday. We discussed qualtiy of life issues and economic growth, and the balance of the two as we move in the next phase of Nashville. Thank you to the Nashville Area Chamber for spearheading this initiative.
Thank you to everyone who came and connected with us at last night's Brewing Up Business networking event. 2020 is off to a great start! Thank you to our location host Liberty Party Rental, food by City Farm Co. and wine by Red Spirits & Wine.

We are incredibly proud of our 2019 PreFlight scholarship recipients. Three of them made pitches at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center's PreFlight Pitch Night Wednesday night! See quotes from these entrepreneurs below:

“SampleShelfRX would like to thank the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce for awarding us a scholarship to attend the Entrepreneur Center’s Pre Flight Program. During the 16 week program, the EC assisted SampleShelfRX with the completion of our company concept, identification of key community partners and customers, development of a targeted marketing plan, establishment of a financial budget, and the finalization a company pitch that we can discuss with future Angel investors. I was fortunate to pitch our company concept to a room of over 100 attendees. The Chamber’s scholarship enabled us to turn our company dream into a reality. We are so very thankful for the support!”, Ryan Davis, CEO SampleshelfRX

'From my personal perspective, I've really struggled at finding local transgender resources. My business idea was birthed out of frustration. Just this past week, trans people have reached out to my Twitter DM from across the country. There seems to be a groundswell of support. For someone who's felt alienated with my own gender transition, it gives me hope.' Winter Breedlove, transLATE

'Secret Soldiers: Civil War Heroines in Disguise'
Dress rehearsals for Secret Soldiers began this week and we can't wait for the performance!

Please join us for the Nashville Children's Theatre's special showing of ' Secret Soldiers: Civil War Heroines in Disguise' sponsored by AllianceBernstein on Friday, January 24th.
A reception will be held at 6 pm and the show will start at 7 pm. Stick around after the show for a Q&A session where we will further tackle the themes of ' Secret Soldiers'.

While the Civil War rages on outside the walls of the Marine U.S.A. General Hospital, another conflict arises inside. A nurse has discovered that injured Private Lyons Wakeman is actually Sarah Wakeman, a woman! Should the hospital registry be changed to prove that women can fight in battle? Or should it stay intact so Sarah can receive her earned pension and her family avoid shame?
Based on over 250 military accounts of women who fought as Union soldiers, the audience will hear testimony from historical characters like Harriet Tubman and members of the first African American regiment, act as jury, and deliver the verdict on Private Lyons’ fate.

Please note: We ask that all guests register for the reception AND purchase tickets using the 2 links below. If you are unable to attend, we hope you will look at other showings of this performance. Members of the Nashville LGBT Chamber can use promo code BRGUEST to receive $3 off each ticket purchased for the other showings of 'Secret Soldiers.'
