Weekly Wrap-Up: January 21, 2022

The Weekly

Wrap Up

January 21, 2021

Your email on all things the Chamber worked on this week and what you need to know.

CEO Brief

We held a virtual Network Connect Thursday night, and while we were not in person brewing up business we still had a great time hearing from members and forging new connections. We also were able to celebrate Lauren’s birthday! You can read more about the program in the CONNECT section below.

We chose to hold this event virtually due to the record number of cases of the Omicron variant of COVID. We all must do our parts to lower these numbers and we hope that you are vaccinated and boosted, and doing what you can to slow the spread. To that point, the government launched a program this week where you can request 4 free rapid tests delivered to your home. They are very simple to request here: www.covidtests.gov

Another health story in the news this week is the nationwide blood shortage. This should remind us that while blood donations are open to gay men in other countries without preconditions, the US still has not addressed discriminatory Food and Drug Administration rules. As the nation faces a shortage, the Biden administration commented on the FDA's long-time blood donation guidelines, which are impacting the LGBTQ+ community by preventing gay and bisexual men from being eligible blood donors. We hope this crisis helps change this outdated and discriminatory policy.

Check out the EDUCATE section for some really great stories around diversity and inclusion we found this week! And you will see the announcement of our first Classroom Connect program topic.

We are also announcing some really exciting events coming up. Check out our events page to see everything we have scheduled and get them on your calendar. The newest one that just came together is a special program we are doing with our member Music City Baseball for Black History Month. Check this event out below in CONNECT.

To close, we want to wish our newest member good luck on Saturday.

The Tennessee Titans have joined as a Platinum level member as they prepare for their playoff game, taking on the Cincinnati Bengals at Nissan Stadium on Saturday at @3:30 in the divisional round!

Go Titans and thanks for joining the Chamber! TITAN UP!

Thanks to all of our members and we hope everyone has a good weekend.

A number of bills were filed this week that we will be monitoring. Two of them deal with trans athletes, expanding on the law that was passed last year. Another deal with access to youth healthcare, and several more deal with school curriculum and teaching. We won’t know the full extent of what we are dealing with until the bill filing deadline of February 4th. We will keep you updated and have a full breakdown of all bills after that deadline.

We wanted to share some stories that you may find helpful as we move into the new year and think through your workplace goals for 2022 around DEI.

The Dangers Of Mistaking Diversity For Inclusion In The Workplace

Don't make this mistake! Did you know many businesses continue to confuse "Diversity" and "Inclusion" practices within their infrastructure?

To Keep Customers And Talent, You Must Invest In Diversity, Equity And Inclusion As A Business Strategy

Do you want your business to thrive? Then it is imperative for you to invest in diversity and inclusion. Not only will this draw in customers, but talented employees as well. Without a focus on these areas, it's likely your business will flounder.

Classroom Connect - Grow with Google

Our education series is back for 2022 and this year we will be highlighting curriculum from Grow With Google. In our first installment, Make Your Website Work for You, learners will discover how to create a search-friendly website that drives user action and supports their goals. Our member Tolbert Marketing and Events will facilitate this program on Thursday, February 24th.

We want to know what YOU want to learn about. Fill out this survey to help us select the programs we offer in this series.

We are incredibly excited to announce an upcoming event in partnership with our member Music City Baseball in celebration of Black History Month.

Join us on Wednesday, February 23rd for an interview, book signing, and reception celebrating Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke,

This is the story of a “hidden figure” in sports history: the inventor of the high five and the first openly gay Major League Baseball player.

Location and more information will be announced soon, but you can register now to save your spot!
