Weekly Wrap-Up: March 18, 2022

The Weekly

Wrap Up

March 18, 2022

What the Chamber worked on this week and what you need to know.

CEO Brief

There is a lot going on and things being announced with the Chamber, and you all are very engaged with it.

We announced the Pride in Business Awards on Monday and we already have so many nominations, sponsors, and tickets sold. We think everyone is excited to get together and celebrate again! Please nominate deserving individuals in the evolved categories, we can’t have awards if we don’t have nominations. If you are interested in supporting the work of the Chamber outside of your membership, please sponsor and buy tickets, this is our signature event and main fundraising opportunity. Sponsorships are going fast so lock yours in before they are gone!

Speaking of going fast, we have sold over 300 Predator Pride Night tickets in just two weeks. When tickets are gone they are gone, don’t miss out on what will be a special night in Smashville. Are you attending as a group or will your corporate suite be filled with LGBTQ+ employees? Let us know, we want to make sure you are included in our pride shoutouts and we want to stop by and see you.

So many of you are also interested in what your chamber is doing and where we are going with our work. We saw a tremendous response to our survey this week over 30% of members responding! There is still time if you have not given your input. You have until Wednesday to complete the survey. Do it NOW!

While you are at it, we are sharing one from an awesome student at MTSU on the impact of employee resource groups (ERGs) on LGBTQIA+ employees, including potential effects on turnover intentions, organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and perceptions of organizational support for his thesis. To examine these relationships, he created a survey and is asking you to fill it out. We look forward to looking at these results as well!

Thanks to API of Middle TN and Camp for partnering with us for our March BUB on Thursday night. It was a great event with lots of new connections made. Don’t forget about another opportunity to network this Thursday with our partner event with the Junior Chamber. Details below.

Things continue to move fast at the legislature. We are still actively involved in advocating against anti-LGBT discriminatory legislation in Tennessee. There have been recent rumblings on what we are doing in terms of advocacy, we want to assure everyone we are still 100% engaged on this and it is a top component of our work.

We changed our approach this year after hearing from business leaders and lobbyists, government leaders, and advocacy partners. We are not doing a state letter or public event at this time, we are directing corporations to sign the national letter that is out. We are taking in corporate and small business leaders to meet with legislators directly and talk about these issues. We also continue to coordinate the effort of business lobbyists to help stop these bills. And of course, we are working with our incredible community partners like the Tennessee Equality Project and the ACLU of TN to strategize and support our combined goals of stopping these harmful bills and supporting equality.

As we mentioned last week, the top bill we have been engaged on, the “Youth Protection Act” which was nothing but one of the most restrictive and harmful trans-healthcare bans in the country, was sent to General Sub. While it is not dead, this is a very positive move that makes it highly unlikely this bill could pass.

The other bills on our Priority Bill List are up next week and we are engaging on stopping them.

As I mentioned, our LGBT grassroots equality group is working hard and doing incredible things. ***Take direct grassroots action! Our partners the Tennessee Equality Project have several campaigns active. We hope you will take action.

Large corporate businesses are being asked to sign the national letter that our partners Freedom For All Americans and the HRC are coordinating. This letter is being used here as a way to show the wide national objection to these bills from corporations.
