New and Renewing Members-

Please join us in welcoming the following businesses that joined our Chamber this week:

Legislative Update-

We did it! The Tennessee Senate deferred passage of three anti-LGBT bills and will take them back up during next year’s legislative session.

This is a very good thing! We live to fight another day.

We will be ready again next session with the large coalition of businesses that spoke out this year to oppose them, with even more businesses that are not afraid to speak out against discrimination. Business does have a voice in politics, no matter what some politicians think, and they clearly spoke out on this issue.

We want to thank the many legislators that heard the business communities concerns with passage of these bills and thought about the economic impact the state would have faced with passage.

The bills that were deferred to next year-

  • "The AG Enforcement" bill, SB 1499 would encourage school districts to pass anti-transgender restroom policies that prohibit transgender students from using the facilities that correspond with their gender identity and would require the Attorney General to provide legal defense for those discriminatory school districts at taxpayers’ expense.

  • The "Adoption"- bill, SB 1304 would allow taxpayer-funded child welfare services to discriminate against LGBTQ people, single parents, and people of minority faiths, among others. Legislation that creates a license to discriminate in child welfare services has skyrocketed in recent years – similar laws are on the books in 9 states across the country.

  • Earlier this session, the Senate deferred "License to Discriminate" HB 563/SB 364 which would prevent local governments from providing business incentives to companies on the basis of their internal policies, such as LGBT-inclusive anti-discrimination protections.

We want to thank our LGBT community partners that worked tirelessly alongside us this session. Tennessee Equality Project, Freedom for All Americans, Human Rights Campaign, HRC Nashville.

You can read our partners press release for further information. There are also numerous articles on the deferral of the bills. Make sure you check out this article about Speaker Casada telling businesses to stay out of politics. We will not let him intimidate us or are members.
